Appeal to create a museum at Court Barn, Chipping Campden

The High Street, Chipping Campden. Photo The Campden SocietyModern craftsmanship and design have flourished amongst the beauty of the north Cotswolds since the Arts and Crafts movement at the beginning of the twentieth century. A line of inspiration runs from C. R. Ashbee, Gordon Russell and Michael Cardew to the modern silversmith and industrial designer Robert Welch.

The Guild of Handicraft Trust was set up in 1990 in Chipping Campden, which is at the centre of this story. The Trust encourages the appreciation of the Arts and Crafts movement and its legacy in the north Cotswolds; cares for the work and archives of local designers and craftspeople; and encourages craft and design in the present day.

Court Barn as it will be. Design by Gareth Hoskins ArchitectsNow the Trust is creating a permanent exhibition and study centre in an eighteenth-century barn in one of the loveliest parts of Chipping Campden. Court Barn will house a permanent exhibition of work by leading designers and craftspeople; archive storage on a mezzanine gallery; study facilities; a meeting space; and exciting temporary exhibitions.

The cost of the project stands at £1,340,000. Thanks to the generosity of the Heritage Lottery Fund and private grant-giving bodies we have already raised £1,140,000. Work will begin in spring 2006, and we need just £200,000 to complete the project. Please help us to achieve this. We believe Court Barn will be a source of pride for local people, and a delight for Chipping Campden’s many visitors.
