The
former Winsford Cottage Hospital in Halwill Junction, Devon is a
unique but little known example of the work of C.F.A Voysey, remaining
largely as Voysey conceived it, with many of his trademark features
despite 50 years in the hands of the NHS.
The Winsford Trust,
which now owns the building, is taking part in this year’s Heritage
Open Days and will be open to the general public on Saturday
10th September. |

The Voysey Society has been founded to celebrate the oeuvre of
architect and designer Charles Francis Annesley Voysey (1857-1941),
one of the leading figures in both the Arts and Crafts movement
and its immediate successors.
It is the Society’s objective to encourage research into all
aspects of Voysey’s life & work and to help to maintain his legacy.
Amongst other activities, the Society hopes to develop a programme
of lectures and visits around the country.
They are now seeking expressions of interest in joining the Society.
In particular they hope to fill key committee roles including Executive
Chair and Secretary. If you are interested in membership, please
contact the acting membership secretary,
Dr Peter King
with your name, address and email address. If appropriate, an indication
of your willingness to take an active role will be especially welcome.
There is no commitment and no cost at this stage.

and Edwardians. The event marks the launch of a new book

Brooking Collection is moved to a safe place pending plans to
build new museum. The major part of the collection, currently housed
at the University of Greenwich's Woolwich warehousing, must find
a new site. Please

year, the Church of
the Good Shepherd in Dockenfield will be celebrating 100 years
since the foundation stone was laid. The architect of the church
was W Curtis Green. To mark the actual day, John Chuter,
nephew of the builder, will be giving a talk about it at the church
at 7pm on 28th May. There will also be a display in the church from
28th May to 7th June.

Whiteley
Village near Walton-on-Thames, Surrey is currently undergoing a
modernisation that renovates the Arts and Crafts elements and preserves
the very best of the architecture whilst providing homes that meet
the needs and aspirations of current and future residents.The
project will cost on the region of £34M of which nearly three-quarters
has been found; the
Whiteley Village
Appeal is still looking for about £6M to finish off the project.

Race to save UndershawHindhead
Together is leading on an appeal to save Undershaw, the former
home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, from residential development. The
striking redbrick house, which Conan Doyle commissioned and lived
in at the height of his career, sits in 3 acres of land in Hindhead,
high in the Surrey Hills, looking down the Nutcombe Valley and onto
the South Downs.

autumn the University of Bath is presenting a program of three linked
lunchtime lectures on "Head, Hand & Heart: The Arts & Crafts Movement
in Great Britain". The fee per lecture is £6.50 including a sandwich

The Society has received the sad news of the unexpected death
of John George chairman of the arts and crafts movement
in surrey since it was founded in 1996. he led the society
with imagination and enthusiasm and will be greatly missed.

The
first of a new series of photo galleries
is now available. This pilot shows a few photographs from a recent
ACMS visit to Ditchling in Sussex to see Sir Frank Brangwen's former
workshop. There are also some pictures of his work produced at Ditchling
which are now at Swansea Guildhall.It is planned to extend the
galleries to show a few pictures of every visit (where possible)
from now on.

new project to research and celebrate Newlyn CopperA project
is being established to study the history of Newlyn copper and to
bring together pictures, documents and oral history of this important
Arts and Crafts venture. The outcomes of the project would be to
increase public access to and enjoyment of the history and cultural
significance of Newlyn copper, promoting exhibitions, web based
information and a publication to capture and illustrate the Newlyn

House Antiques are holding an inaugural Arts & Crafts selling
Exhibition at the Richard Dennis Gallery, 144 Kensington Church
Street, London from June 7th to 16th 2007.
The selling exhibition has part emphasis on CFA Voysey and AW
Simpson of Kendal, as coincidentally it is the 150th anniversary
of both men's birth.

As part of their Edwardians season, the BBC are showing
architecture critic Patrick Nuttgens' 1981 documentary on the architect
Sir Edwin Lutyens, exploring the plans and buildings of the man
who designed Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral and the city of New
Delhi.

The City Art Centre, Edinburgh
will be holding an exhibition "Hand, Heart & Soul - The Arts
and Crafts Movement in Scotland" from 30 June to 23 September
2007.The variety of exhibits, from stained glass windows, enamels,
tapestries, domestic furniture and homewares, filmed interiors,
architectural plans, illustrated books and garden furniture will
provide audiences with many routes of interest and much to admire.
For enthusiasts, the exhibition will offer the opportunity to view
key items as well as works rarely seen in public.

Thursday 1st March at 21:00 Pugin: The God of Gothic.
Augustus Pugin designed the Houses of Parliament. He designed
cathedrals, churches and grand country houses. He created furniture,
lighting and wallpaper. His mid-19th-century ideas about what ordinary
houses should look like are hugely influential today.

Following
the disappointment of second place on BBC's Restoration Village,
The Watts Gallery
has been awarded a £4.3 million earmarked grant. A wonderful Christmas
Present from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The award will provide the foundation
stone of the £10m Hope Appeal to save the Gallery. The Gallery has
already reached over £1m of pledges and gifts, but still needs to
continue fundraising. If you would like to make a donation online
